Addiction 101

October 5, 2024

9am - 3pm EDT

This 5-hour presentation will explore the history of addiction, from drugs and alcohol to gambling to sex to all things internet-related. It will conceptualize addiction as an overall process, rather than people being addicted “to” something. The relationship between addiction and early internal incorporation of negative messages will be explained. The phenomenon of resistance to the concepts of “sex addiction” and “codependence” will be explored contextually. Finally, recovery will be defined as not just recovery from addiction, but as recovery of Connection. Recovery strategies and tools will be provided.

Sexuality & Substance Abuse

November 2, 2024

9am - 3pm EDT

Sex is keyed into our limbic systems, which controls our survival, our emotions, our reward system, and our memories. Our limbic system is vulnerable to the effects of substance use/abuse, since mind-altering substances such as cocaine, heroin, and hallucinogens first affect the reward system and then stores the pleasurable effects in memory, which leads to cravings and addiction. The intersection of sexuality and substance use occurs when we use drugs while having sex, which exponentially intensifies the pleasure of both; when we use drugs to a point where our ability to engage in sexual behavior is impaired; or when we use drugs to escape memories of traumatic sexual experiences. This workshop will explore and explain the many points of this intersection and describe interventions for developing healthy sexual feelings and behavior in recovery from addiction.

Pelvic Health Physiotherapy

November 3, 2024

9am - 3pm EDT

The pelvic health physiotherapy elective will give practitioners a wider understanding of the pelvis, specifically the pelvic floor and its role within sexual health and dysfunction. The hope is that by the end of the 5 hour elective you will have an understanding of what a pelvic health physiotherapist does in practice and when to refer patients. The elective will emphasize the importance of working on a team in sexual health treatment to provide the best care for patients.

What some of our students say

"I think this is the best course that I have attended. The passion of the team members, speakers, videos, and panels are very impressive. I really loved Jessica’s story; her honesty, perspective and passion. She opens her heart and make us see beyond. We just hope that we can help our Veterans with the same dedication and enthusiasm."

-Wanda

"Wow! I am learning so much so far. I can't believe how much material there is to cover about gender affirming care. I've never considered all the variables that go along with being transgender or non-binary. Everything was excellent. I really liked having families come in, medical guest speakers, and gender diverse individuals."
-Mary Ann S

"Very informative and applicable to my current practice as an RN in an Emergency Dept, and to my practice as a PMHNP. Supervision is very valuable, and not something we do in nursing. I learned new things in all aspects of this training. Most importantly: categories of identity including sexual orientation, gender identity, gender expression, and biological gender. I will be more confident in my practice addressing all of these categories Dr. WIlliams was awesome (identify with him, cause he's an NP."

-Catherine Spaid, CA- February 2024

"INCREDIBLE TRAINING!!! This has been the most well-planned, informative, and effective type of training webinar I have ever attended. The presenters and speakers have expertise and experiences that need to be shared and taught about. The climate of this country is calling a huge need for Transgender Care. I can safely say that people who undergo this training will be better mental and medical professionals tenfold."

‍Understanding Sexual Addiction

w/ Board Certified Sex & Addiction Therapist Dr. Carol Clark

‍.    In this episode of the In Search of More podcast hosted by Eliyahu Nash with special guest Dr. Carol Clark, they explore the pervasive nature of addiction in America, linking it to childhood trauma and negative messages from authority figures. She highlights that addiction can manifest through various behaviors, including sex, alcohol, drugs, and pornography. Dr. Clark emphasizes the importance of recognizing sex addiction as a valid condition and underscores that recovery is about rebuilding connections. She also delves into the evolution of the 12-step program, its relevance to different addictive behaviors, and the need for supportive communities. Additionally, Dr. Clark discusses the isolating nature of pornography addiction, her personal experiences, and her new book on finding meaning and connection through life's challenges.

Tampons contain lead, arsenic and potentially toxic chemicals, studies say. Here’s what to know

A small pilot study detected lead in both organic and nonorganic tampons, but further research is needed to determine whether the heavy metals might leach into the body and impact health.

Hate Is Addictive

by Dr. Carol Clark

Who here is tired, exhausted actually, by the political climate in which we are living?

What makes it so draining?

Addiction.

Or rather, the addictive state in which we live – needing more excitement, more drama, more novelty – that feeds our underlying need for stimulation.

I speak and write continually about this addictive process in which we are exposed to increased levels of stimulation, which leads to the Limbic System (Survival Brain) raising our baselines for how much stimulation feels normal, and then we need more.

We can get stimulation from anywhere: cocaine, shopping, smartphones, pornography, gambling, the news, and even anger and drama. The more we get, the more we want. It feels counter-intuitive because our Prefrontal Cortex (Enlightened Brain) is thinking, “I don’t want this, I want to calm down, I want to relax, I want to just think positive and happy thoughts. But the Survival Brain is not thinking, it’s just acting and reacting and so it keeps building tolerance until we are drained.

There are a lot of people in the media who are marketing hate to us. Hate stimulates the Survival Brain and shuts down the Enlightened Brain. In that state, we are easily manipulated and unable to think for ourselves. The relentless outpouring of vitriol keeps us exhausted.

So, what can we do?

The first step towards Recovery is to admit there is a problem and recognize the addictive process. Recovery is not just from addiction, it is Recovery of Connection. When we become aware of the nature of the process, we can make the conscious decision to live in Recovery. We can gradually bring our baseline back to normal so that we can feel everyday pleasures and experience quiet joy.

My Pocket Therapist: 12 Tools for Living in Connection, is a wonderful guide for Recovery.

Be In Light,

Carol
