Where successfully following through with a decision can build a pattern of feeling good and continuing on that path, the failure to do what one intends can leadto a slip and slide into shame and helplessness. Let’s start with the choice to be in recovery and Connection. Now what? You might say “I will not work past 5 o’clock this week.” That sounds good, but the problem is that Nature abhors a vacuum and saying you will “not” do something leaves a void. Chances are, whenever you say you will not do something, you will probably do it anyway. Instead, frame it as what you will do. “I will leave work at 5 and eat dinner with the family.” By stating the intention “to do” something, you will very likely do it. Most people generally do whatever they set out to do. You can build this into the workbook section under “Structure Your Day” so you can focus on what you will do, not what you won’t do. And remember to “be in the moment” while you are doing whatever you choose!
