Sexuality and Dementias

Course Description:

Alzheimer’s disease and related dementias present one of the most pressing public health emergencies today. This workshop explores the social and medical factors shaping the lives of people living with these conditions, as well as how to address the sexuality-related challenges arising from them. Ethics concerning consent will be explored fully.

Learning Objectives:

Participants will be able to:

  • Describe the science of Alzheimer’s disease and other neurological conditions that can cause dementia.
  • Explain how dementia can manifest itself in a spectrum of inappropriate sexual behaviors.
  • Identify and analyze sources of personal and societal bias in regards to dementia generally, and sexuality and dementia, specifically.
  • Describe how sexual ableism can manifest itself in the context of dementias.
  • Describe the ethical issues involving people with dementia giving consent to sexual activities.
  • Identify useful resources for clients living with dementia and their support network.
